So, without further ado, let’s have a look below at our latest arrival, the white gold, known in Fishing Clash as the Holsatian Whitefish of Lake Constance!

The North Sea houting (our Holsatian Whitefish) is a migratory whitefish native to river systems draining into the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Known for its anadromous lifestyle, it migrates from brackish coastal waters to freshwater rivers to spawn. Let’s take a closer look at some basic facts!

Length: The average length of the North Sea houting is typically around 30-40 cm (12-16 inches). They can grow up to a maximum length of approximately 50 cm (20 inches).

Weight: The average weight of these fish is usually between 0.5 to 1 kg (1.1 to 2.2 pounds). They can reach a maximum weight of about 2 kg (4.4 pounds).

Speed: Since the specific data on the exact swimming speed of the coregonus holsatus is not widely documented, we’re considering similar whitefish. These species typically swim at moderate speeds when migrating or foraging, which can be estimated around 2-3 mph (3-5 km/h). During short bursts or when evading predators, they can swim faster.

The North Sea houting exhibits a fascinating anadromous lifestyle, meaning it migrates from the sea into freshwater rivers to spawn. Like salmon, North Sea houting migrate from their brackish coastal habitats into freshwater rivers to reproduce, often returning to specific spawning grounds where they were born, demonstrating a strong homing instinct known as natal homing.

Historically, the North Sea houting was abundant in the river systems of Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands. However, by the mid-20th century, their populations had drastically declined due to habitat loss, pollution, and the construction of dams and weirs that obstructed their migratory routes. Intensive conservation efforts have been made to restore their populations. One of the most notable programs has been in Denmark, where extensive habitat restoration, pollution control, and the construction of fish passes have been implemented. These efforts have led to the successful re-establishment of North Sea houting populations in some rivers where they were previously extinct. Conservationists have also engaged in restocking programs, where young houting are bred in hatcheries and released into suitable river systems to boost population numbers.

In regions where the North Sea houting has been successfully reintroduced, it has become an important species for local recreational fisheries, highlighting the cultural and economic value of this conservation success. Additionally, the presence of North Sea houting in a river system can serve as an indicator of the overall health of the ecosystem. Their requirement for clean, unpolluted waters for spawning makes them a good measure of environmental quality.
