Get ready, Anglers: a new, breathtaking fishing spot is about to set our adventure ablaze! Welcome to the Bay of Fires! In this article, we’re not only exploring the scenery in its natural context, but also taking a look into the past, and the discovery of the bay itself!

The Bay of Fires has deep historical roots, dating back thousands of years to the region’s Aboriginal inhabitants, whose fires once dotted the shoreline, giving this iconic bay its name. The vivid orange hues of the rocks, caused by a unique lichen species, add an otherworldly glow to the coast, making it feel like we’re entering a fantasy realm filled with beauty and wonder. So, let’s explore and learn all about the Bay of Fires!

Bay of Fires in Fishing Clash

Bonfire of the past

Although the region had been home to Indigenous peoples long before European explorers got there, the person credited with “discovering” and naming the Bay of Fires was Captain Tobias Furneaux, an English navigator and Royal Navy officer. Furneaux was part of the second Pacific voyage led by Captain James Cook in the early 1770s, and he served as the commander of the support ship, HMS Adventure. During this expedition, in 1773, while sailing along the northeastern coast of Tasmania, Furneaux spotted fires burning on the shore, which were likely made by the local Aboriginal people who had inhabited the area for thousands of years.

These fires led Furneaux to name the location the Bay of Fires, although he did not land in the area or explore it in detail. The fires were likely part of the traditional practices of the Aboriginal peoples, possibly related to land management, hunting, or signaling. This moment of European “discovery” highlights the intersection of colonial exploration and the long-standing presence of Indigenous Australians, whose knowledge and management of the land spanned generations. Today, the bay’s name serves as a lasting reminder of that first encounter.

The stones? Ablaze?

The vibrant orange hues that color the stones in the Bay of Fires are often mistakenly assumed to be the origin of the area’s fiery name. However, the name comes from that first sighting of the bay by Captain Furneaux. The intense orange and red coloring of the rocks is due to the presence of a lichen species, Xanthoria parietina. This lichen thrives in the coastal environment, covering the granite boulders with its bright coloration, which serves to protect the organism from harsh sunlight and ultraviolet radiation. The contrast of these lichen-coated boulders against the white sand and crystal-clear water creates the iconic visual spectacle that the Bay of Fires is known for today.

While the name may have come from the ancient fires of the Aboriginal inhabitants, the rocks themselves offer a different kind of natural marvel. Lichens are sensitive to their environment, absorbing nutrients from the air and water, which means their growth reflects the delicate balance of coastal ecosystems. The rocks hosting the lichen are not only visually stunning, but they also serve as a reminder of the ecological complexity and beauty of the region.
